11/24 Meeting

Hey guys, its Juliana again. :)

So today’s meeting was really fun – just getting to know each other and making nametags. =)

AND we officially started the Change for Change Drive today! So grab your Arizona Iced Tea bottle and start collecting! :D
OH, and something I didn’t mention at the meeting, but its gonna be a contest! So whoever raises the most money will get a really cool prize. (Which Matt and I haven’t decided yet, so if you have any suggestions, feel free to mention them in your comment!)

Anywho, hope you all have an awesome Thanks Giving Break, and I’ll see you next week. :)

11/17 – The Hometown Shake Down

Hey Guys!

Important news straight from the IC blog:
“If you haven’t heard yet, the LRA Disarmament Bill passed its first big test yesterday. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee affirmed the bill unanimously, moving the bill one step closer to President Obama’s desk. This is a colossal pat on the back for all of our efforts, but the time for celebration is yet to come. We still have a lot of work to do.”

Anyway, we also had an awesome meeting yesterday tlking about this same bill. But even for those of you that didn’t go this is a REALLY important blog post!

Yesterday, we wrote letters to Senator Diane Feinstein and Congressman Howard (Buck) McKeon. And we made a couple phone calls too. :)

But whether or not you went to the meeting today, you still have a really important action item: To participate in “The Hometown Shake Down”.

What’s that?
Well, today, everyone involved in Invisible Children are calling/emailing and writing letters to their congress men and women. And we need your help too!

Below, I’ll have a sample phone call, letter & email.
You can do any of the three, but all we ask is that you do one. :)
And really, how long does it take to copy and paste an email? Like what, 35 seconds?
(And even if you wrote a letter yesterday, it’d still be awesome if you called in or sent an email)

Hold the phone. (Yes I really did just say that.)
Before you do ANYTHING else, go here and sign the petition for Joseph Koney’s arrest!
This will take you right to it and all you have to do is put down your name and email and you will have signed it!

Okay, now you can continue. :) below are the sample email, phone call & letter. Take a look!

Email: (Why this is important: Our elected representatives keep a tally of how many emails they receive on an issue. The more they hear about their constituents’ concern for this conflict, the more likely they are to make peace a priority. It’s the whole squeaky wheel concept.)

http://feinstein.senate.gov

http://mckeon.house.gov/

“Hi. My name is _________ and I’m writing from _________ to ask you to do more to help the children being victimized by the
Lord’s Resistance Army and to help achieve peace.
The situation on the ground is deteriorating rapidly and immediate action is needed to stop the violence and protect people from
attack and abduction. Much greater investment is needed from the U.S. to make this happen.
Specifically, I am asking that you sign on to the “LRA Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act” to appropriate money
to help war-affected communities and urge the Obama Administration to address the continued threat posed by the LRA.
As a constituent in your district, I would appreciate your efforts to bring an immediate end to this conflict. Thank you.”

Phone call:
Senator Feinstein’s office: 202-224-3841
Congressman McKeon’s office: 202-225-1956

When you call, if you get a recording you can just skip dow to the script below. But if a live person picks up, say that you would like to leave a comment for (whoever you’re calling) and then, once they’re ready say:

“Hi. My name is _________ and I’m calling from _________ to ask President Obama to do more to help the children being
victimized by the Lord’s Resistance Army and to help achieve peace in central Africa.
The situation on the ground is deteriorating rapidly and immediate action is needed to stop the violence and protect people from
attack and abduction. Much greater investment is needed from the US to make this happen.
Specifically, I am asking President Obama for three things: first, to make a public statement about the LRA’s atrocities and commit
the United States to stopping Kony by Christmas 2009. Second, I am asking that he sign into law the “LRA Disarmament and
Northern Uganda Recovery Act of 2009” and third, that he commit to the recovery of war-affected areas in east Africa.
I am also calling to urge (name of congress person) to cosign this said bill. (House Bill # HR248-for McKeon- and Senate Bill # S1067-for Feinstein)
As a citizen of the United States, I would appreciate your efforts to bring an immediate end to this conflict. Thank you.

But if its live, don’t hang up yet! They will probably ask you you’re area code and such (not really a big deal).

Letter (this is the one we wrote @ the meeting yesterday):

“Hi. My name is _________ and I’m writing from _________ to ask you to do more to help the children being victimized by the Lord’s
Resistance Army and to help achieve peace.
The situation on the ground is deteriorating rapidly and immediate action is needed to stop the violence and protect people from
attack and abduction. Much greater investment is needed from the U.S. to make this happen.
Specifically, I am asking that you sign on to the “LRA Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act” to appropriate money to
help war-affected communities and urge the Obama Administration to address the continued threat posed by the LRA.
As a constituent in your district, I would appreciate your efforts to bring an immediate end to this conflict. Thank you.”

(And, yes I know the letters take longer, but the cool thing about them is that our congress men & women – or at least their secretaries – have to read all of the hand-written letters.)

Some helpful facts:
- LRA atrocities, which began in Northern Uganda and have now spilled over to three neighboring countries, have been occurring
_ for more than 23 years. This is Africa’s longest running conflict.
- Over 1.5 million people have been forced into squalid displacement camps that lack even the basic necessities.
- Over 60,000 children have been abducted and used in this brutal conflict as frontline soldiers and sex slaves.

Anyway guys, thank you SO MUCH for helping out!
See you Tuesday! (And get all your friends to sign the petition too! :D )

-Juliana

11/10/09 meeting

Hey there guys its Matt!
So today we watched some videos on the makers of the bags for Mend movement that of course isn’t required for you to buy a bag or anything, but they are cool if you want to look into getting one.
We also watched the video on We Want Obama for the passing of the bill, Juliana and I would think it would be awesome if we could get everyone in the club to sign this petition. So please please please sign it :] here is the website
This will take you right to it and all you have to do is put down your name and email and you will have signed it!

10/29/09 meeting

Sorry guys it’s Matt. I posted something and I guess it didn’t actually post
anyway so the meeting was great we finished the last like 5 minutes of the ICU video!
We also got to watch the schools for schools video which was awesome and we also watched the 2007 video update and like I mentioned it’s always good to see where all the work, time, and effort we put into the club actually goes and it’s always heartwarming to see the lives that you have impacted with your help :]
so remember guys we need fundraising ideas and also ill be checking in and out in the next couple of days and choosing someone for a prize for commenting the blog so remember comment!

10/12 & 10/20 Meetings

Hey guys!

This is Juliana again. :)  Basically, these last two weeks we’ve watched the original Invisible Children documentary (produced in ’03) – the one that started it all.

Next week, we’ll finish up the last bit of the movie (and recap it for others who missed one or both parts) and watch the ’07 update and have a bit of discussion. :)

Also, if you want to borrow a copy of the dvd we have plenty available! We’re selling them for $5, but renting them for free. :)

Also, if we have time, we’ll talk about Schools for Schools – what that is and how it helps.

Thanks for reading and commenting! Oh, and don’t forget to take a look at our twitter and facebook pages!

9/22/09 Meeting

Hey! This is your club’s co-President Juliana speaking. :)

Thanks to everyone who attended our 2nd official meeting!

Matt and I were very excited to see so many new faces!

Today did some re-introductions (of Matt, Tiffanie – our secretary, and Mrs. Margrave – our advisor), and we told everyone about Ms. Neylan, who will be our OFF-campus advisor. She substitutes in our district, so some of you may have had her before. Anyway, she (along with Mrs. Margrave) have been with the club since it first started, we’re excited to get all the help we can this year. =]

Matt, Tiff, Mrs. M and I also shared a little bit about why we, personally, are in ICU club, and why we had decided to join.

Then we wanted to have a few of the new comers volunteer why THEY decided to come today, Alex shared about the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) and another Alex shared about why she decided to join this year. We also had Joe share, who was a member last year, :]

Alex and Alex both got a copy of the original Invisible Children movie and the 2007 update. :)

But unfortunately we only had three volunteers to share. Obviously that didn’t work as well as we’d hoped, so we’ll have to try a new tactic next time.

Capt. Collet also shared about his son (who is in Uganda right now) and how our club can talk to him about what’s going on there RIGHT NOW – which is pretty cool if you ask me. :)

We also talked about possibly showing the original movie during two meetings. (Since the movie is about an hour long, we would have two consecutive meetings, like Tuesday and then Wednesday in order to finish it).

Sooo…. Your action items for this week are to:

  • Check out our facebook group (search “VHS ICU Club 09-10!” we’ll have info about or new Twitter on there as well later today.
  • Think of creative ideas for a fundraiser! (Can be big or small)
  • Comment the blog (hey, since you’re already here, why not get to it? Just scroll down to where it says “0 Comments” or whatever the number is, and post something! :) )

See you next week! :D

    Summer Meetings

Hey guys, soo sorry for the delayed posting.  This week and last week we talked about summer meetings.  Amelia is officially going to AOC so Juliana and Matt are planning to head the ICU program at Valencia next year.  Amelia is going to start an Invisible Children club at AOC (working with the preexisting Amnesty International club).  We’re starting an alliance!  This is why we need every member who possibly can to come to summer meetings…

At the summer meetings, future fundraisers and marketing will be planned (along with much more, I promise you)!

The action items for the past two meetings have been to get the exact travel dates (if possible) of when you will be out of town for the summer. Please post them in a comment, and Amelia will proceed to book meetings from there. : D

ALSO…ICU is going to have an end of the year party after school gets out.  It will either be the first day of summer (the Friday after finals) or that Saturday.  In a comment, let me know which day works for you and we’ll plan the party according to which day will work best for the most people.…  the party will be at Amelia’s house and will be a potlach, i.e. everyone brings one item of food to share.

    2-23-09

    Hey guys!

Today we went over club requirements (the first being blog commenting, of course). If you’re reading this you’re set: in your comment somehow creatively incorporate the word ‘smorgasbord’.

Then we brainstormed marketing ideas/logos/slogans for the Rosaline screening and VTV announcing for any other fundraiser/event we advertise.

    Cool meeting!

    The 10th of February…

Basically, we went over the general history of the war and we got updated on the current situation in the war in Uganda.

After that, we began writing letters to some kids we sponsor in Uganda and also began making a poster for them.

We will continue that next week! : ]

    Happy four day weekend, everybody!

    Sorry guys,

Today’s meeting was cancelled. Mainly because the progress with staff on my part from last week had not gone through yet.

Our meeting next week will still carry on, we’ll be watching some clips, and hopefully be making cards/writing letters to the orphanage we sponsor in Uganda. : ]

This week I just needed to get some things together before I could take up you guys’ time to have a meeting.

Continue brainstorming, thinking about those kids in Uganda, and check this out:

    http://behindthescenes.invisiblechildren.com/post/73388591/90-days-away-from-the-rescue

LOVE the IC guys Laren, Bobby, and Jason!

    Tuesday the 27th of January

Today we had a really brief meeting, just touched base on some of our action items from last week (contacting restaurants for restaurant nights, contacting administration for the low-down on the 50/50 raffle show-down, etc. : ])

For those of you who couldn’t make it to the meeting, how are those action items coming?

List brainstorming ideas in yo comments!

Here’s a question to answer in your comment as well: What is the main reason you’re in ICU? What impacted you the most when you first heard about the situation in Uganda?

    Inauguration Day Meeting!

    Hey,

Today we talked about our book drive result (see last post), talked about our 3-day weekends, blog commenting, and BRAINSTORMED. A LOT!

    On the to-do list:
    Restaurant nights
    IN-N-OUT <–Juliana
    Wolf Creek<–Adam

    50/50 raffle<–Amelia
    Disneyland tix/discounts raffle<–Adrian

Cued up: donations calls to businesses!!

    ICU Collected….

    3495 books, in three months.

    NICE!

    First meeting of 2009!

Hey guys, today’s outside meeting went well, we brainstormed a bunch of raffles and fundraising ideas, including a 50/50 raffle, raffles for a bunch of prizes (that we have the hook-ups to get), etc.

    Action items were:
-Bring in a list of brainstormed ideas, just jot down a couple ideas we can discuss as a group next Tuesday.
-Bring in any books for the book drive before this Thursday at 3 PM, to room 930. Tell Amelia you’re going to do this in advance in a comment!
    -Comment this ol’ thing

    December 2nd meeting : ]

Hey guys! Hope everybody had an excellent Thanksgiving.

Today we all painted the book drive boxes (to make them ICU green) that will be distributed around school starting next week.

Next week will be the kickoff for the book drive at Valencia… so once the fliers are out, make sure you spread the word to everyone you know to bring in books!  Next week we will also be doing a change for change blitz… MEANING…. we will be running around campus at lunch in teams, competing to see which team brings in the most money. Bring your change for change bottles (we’ll be collecting the money from C4C next week)  and a buddy to get change with to next week’s meeting!

We have two weeks left in Schools for Schools and we need to bring in as much money as possible for the kids in Uganda! While we are waiting to get out of school for the holiday, they are waiting to get to go to school so let’s keep raising money to make that possible for them.

    Action items:

-raise ridiculous amounts of money in change for those cool Ugandan kids

-bring your change for change bottle in (hopefully it’s full of money!)

-bring books from friends and family for the book drive

-brainstorm ideas of places to put book drive fliers (once they are made) and places to collect books from

    Hasta Luego!

    11-18-08 Meeting

“Change for change! Change for change! Change for change!”

^^ That chant should be running through your head by next Tuesday! Get your bottles together! Ask your classes to donate your change! With a properly labeled bottle, it becomes easy for anyone to give ICU their unwanted spare change.  Do you have a teacher who is particularly fond of ICU? Ask them if you can send the bottle around class to get their change, too.

This week, fill your bottles! Bring your (hopefully) filled change bottles in next Tuesday. If you have read this post and are going to do change for change, include the word ‘penguin’ in your comment! If they are full before Tuesday, bring it in to Mrs. Margrave’s room (you can count your total prior to turning it in if you want to see how much you brought in alone) and empty it into the collective change jug. : )

Also: bring your books in! Mrs. Margrave has a book bin at the back of her classroom. Feel free to turn them in at lunches to her room.

    COOOOOMMMMMEEEEEENNNNNTTTTT!    por favor?

    11-4-08 meeting

    Hello all!

Sorry this post wasn’t up last night… my eyes were glued to the TV watching the election!

Hokay, so your actions items are:

    1. comment this blog

    2.  bring in a change for change bottle, decorated or somehow labeled ICU <– muy importante

    3. ask friends and family for books, bring them to the next meeting

ALSO: There are football games on: THIS Friday the 7th and the 14th.  PLLLLEEAASSSE try to come and help recycle. We need a lot of help! Let me know in a comment whether or not you can go.

    10-28 meeting :]

    Hey guys!

Today’s meeting was small but we did some cool stuff.

Some members got business phone numbers out of phone books and asked for donations, and some brainstormed and painted/decorated ornaments for our little holiday boutique. :]

I’m not able to do recycling at the football game on Friday night, but if anyone can perhaps take up the opportunity to get some $$ for ICU by getting a group to do recycling, that would be most excellent. Yes? No?

Work on ornaments! The possibilities on this thing are endless!

51 days left in Schools for Schools!

    10-14 Meeting

    Hey guys!
Today some of you read the Darfur article, while the rest of you brainstormed book drive marketing ideas and holiday boutique ideas.

    Your action items are:
-Bring in children’s books, textbooks, and (tasteful) novels for the book drive! Ask everyone you know if they have any! I know I asked one family friend, and she donated 5 whole boxes of them on the spot!
We need to get books, not just for the competition, but for the schools in Uganda that don’t have any.
-Bring in a sample of the item you are going to sell for the holiday boutique at the next meeting!!
Will you do an interesting ornament? Jewelry? Duct tape wallet? The possibilities are ENDLESS!
Remember to try to keep the cost of making your product under $.25 a piece, and that this is a competition!! We want to see who can sell the most of their item.

Do not forget your books and sample item! ICU depends on youuu!!!

Check out this school’s stash!!!! We can beat em! I swear!

This is from TWO CLASSES at their high school.
My parents recently posted on their own blogs to send me books…and I’ve been getting packages of books from all around the country! Some from Kentucky…some from Florida, etc. My garage already has several shelves full of books.
I want to see what YOU can collect! I want enough books to FILL MY GARAGE COMPLETELY! I WANT MY PARENTS TO PULL THEIR HAIR OUT FROM BEING SO OVERWHELMED FROM THE AMOUNT OF BOOKS WE COLLECT!

    Lets do this thing.

10-7-08 Article! Change for Change! Schools for schools! Oh my…

Hello all! Sorry to have missed so many of you at this last meeting. I guess there was a miscommunication about the next meeting date. Oh shwell…

Today we read an article about the process of psychic numbing in response to hearing about global crisis. We asked ourselves how we can get our fellow students and our community to overcome this psychic numbing and become active, making change in people’s lives…even if those people are on the other side of the globe.

We also began counting up all of our change for change money! If you didn’t turn yours in today, turn it in to Mrs. Margrave’s room this week. We’ll still count it…and if you didn’t get in on this round of Change for change, make sure you do on the next one! :]

Today we also passed out a calendar of ICU events for October, November, and December. If you did not get it, go to the top of this page and click on Calendar 2008-2009.

Our homecoming football game is this Friday! Come help us recycle! Meet at the VHS entrance at 6:30 PM to recycle. We need as much help as we can get!

Today we also started brainstorming for our holiday gift making/sales, as well as our new BOOK DRIVE. One of our action items was to brainstorm ways to market these two things…any creative ideas for marketing them? Write them down and bring them to the next meeting, or leave them in a comment. :]

If you haven’t yet signed up on the Schools for Schools website, click here and sign up under Valencia High School!

    Peace!

    CHANGE FOR CHANGE : D

    How’s it going guys?

I hear that some members have made trips to Mrs. Margrave’s room to empty their already full bottles!
    Right on, guys!

I know most of you didn’t receive bottles. This coming Tuesday we’ll count up our change total (please count up your change in advance, if possible. This saves a TON of time.)

Hopefully we’ll be on our way to our goal of $1,000, and know we’ll be doing this again! (The next time with more bottles provided and more school days to rally everyone up, remember we had that 4 day weekend.)

See you all next Tuesday! Happy changing!

Get the change from under your couch cushions! Get the change from your change dishes, wallets, and off of floors! Every cent counts! : ]

    Man Pageant results….

I can’t even believe how amazing the Man Pageant was! Everyone helping- from the backstage crew to the people selling raffle tickets like madmen, made it happen! The guys were hilarious, the crowd was responsive and generous with their donations! The judges did great too!

As president, I thank all of you who helped plan and work this event. The crowd walked away from the event in a great general mood, we got tons of laughs, and raised lots of money for kids in Uganda!
We raised $1,065 total. Schools for schools started 11 days ago, and already we have over $1,000 dollars!

What is our next fundraising idea?
I want to challenge our school (over VTV) to raise $1,000 in two weeks….by bringing in change.
    What do you guys think?
Make sure to come to the meeting Tuesday!

    : D

    ICU Man Pageant commercial!!

9 days until the Man Pageant!

    Hey guys! Great meeting today.

    Here are our updates:

-Tomorrow: club day at both brunches. If you’d like to work it with Amelia, go directly to ICU table at your brunch to help.

-This Friday, September 12th is a rally- we will need ICU members passing out Man Pageant fliers at the doors.

-This Friday, September 12th is also a football game…the first one ICU will be recycling at! To recycle at the game with ICU, come to the game at 6:30 PM, and meet at the VHS entrance... the game starts at 7. If you have an ICU shirt, wear it.

-September 16th is back to school night. To help sell stuff/work the ICU booth, report to room 930 at 5:00.

-September 17th is the dress rehearsal for the Man Pageant. Come at 4:30 PM, as it starts at 5 PM.

-September 18th is the new documentary screenings periods 2-5. Get permission from your teachers to miss class and help out, as your absence can be excused by Mrs. Margrave.

-September 18th is ALSO the MAN PAGEANT!!!!  We will be setting up from lunch, through periods 6 and 7, all the way until the doors open at 6:30 PM. Please come as soon as you can to work it!! This event will be awesome!!

Presale tickets for the Pageant will go on sale on Monday, the 15th…so come by room 930 to get yours to sell!!!! We have 330 tickets to sell, let’s do this!!!!

    The Man Pageant countdown begins!

Thanks to everyone who attended our meeting today!

The Man Pageant countdown has begun! There are 13 days until the dress rehearsal, and 16 days until the Man Pageant and Screening happen!! Who is ready to raise some serious cash (and laughs) at this event?

Today we brainstormed things that need to happen before our event can take place. The first thing on our list is MARKETING. We will market at:

    1. Tell your friends on Myspace and Facebook! Go to myspace.com/vhsicu to get a flier online to post to your friends.
    2. POST FLIERS EVERYWHERE!! Go crazy with the green! When we have fliers printed on our green paper, make sure everyone in all of your classes gets one!
    3. Club day is Wednesday, September 10th. We will have a table set up and will be recruiting new members. We will pass out fliers then, too!
    4. At the rally on September 12th (the Friday before our event), we will have our members hand out fliers at the doors. That Friday, we will also recycle at the football game. Keep this one in mind, we will need a work force at the game!
    5. Back to school night is September 16th, the Tuesday before our event! We will have members roaming in their green shirts, passing out fliers for the event. We will make our presence known!
    6. VTV announcements! Amelia will go on VTV to announce the Man Pageant. If you’d like to go on VTV, e-mail her! Shelton.amelia@gmail.com

Who can work the club day table with Amelia? Who can hand out fliers at the rally? Who can recycle at the football game? Who will be a flier-passer-outer at back to school night? Who will be on VTV with Amelia?

    Bake Sale Stuff!!

    • Kelsey had the brilliant idea of selling baked goods during intermission at the Man Pageant. Get your oven-savvy friends to donate some baked goods so we can raise some extra cash!

Keep the Man Pageant in mind as you go about your day. If you have connections to people who own a business and can donate items or services to ICU (especially for this event) ask them! We can totally do this!

Now, for you loyal readers who stayed with me this whole post: What should our goal be for the amount of $ the Man Pageant generates? $2,000? $3,000? Let’s set the goal in our comments…and then reach it!
